Media Educator

Over the past 24 years, EVC’s External Education Program has offered multi-day professional development institutes, workshops and in-class support for hundreds of classroom teachers and out-of-school educators in successfully integrating project and inquiry-based use of video into their curriculum. The Classroom media coach work with day or after-school educators to successfully implement youth media projects.

We are looking to build a strong media educator team for future contract work. Qualified persons in New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia, and Washington DC are encouraged to apply.

Major responsibilities include:
• Use EVC’s Youth-Powered Video (YPV) curriculum and methodology to develop teachers’ ability to integrate literacy and academic skills with the artistic and technical skills of video production.
• Develop and support a culture of reflective practice through planning and debriefing meetings during which classroom observations, the curriculum, student work and assessments are reviewed and discussed
• Assist educator in developing personal teaching goals and asses their growth throughout the project duration
• Develop strategies for improvement in the areas of classroom, project, and equipment management
• Assist educators in modifying the YPV curriculum to address their learning goals, time and resource restrictions, and course objectives
• Assist educators in using video producttion technology- including cameras, microphones, and editing software in their classrooms
• Support teachers in having their students meet all production deadlines
• Assist in the planning and coordination of rough-cut and final project screenings
• Attend a 2-day training as well as periodic staff development workshops
• Contribute regularly to the Youth-Powered Video social network by raising and responding to practical and theoretical discussions about youth media
• Maintain a coaching journal and participate in media coaching study group

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Media Educators must demonstrate a willingness to utilize EVC’s curriculum and methodology. They must have a demonstrated commitment to working with students and teachers, experience in digital video production skills and editing skills (iMovie, Moviemaker, Premiere, Final Cut Pro, Avid), strong facilitation and co-facilitation skills, and experience with curriculum planning. Media Educators must also be able to model, team teach, observe, and debrief lessons with teachers as well as differentiate levels of coaching to meet the needs of teachers and students. The ideal candidate will be willing to travel within the five boroughs and the tri-state area.

Additional Qualifications:
• Experience working in youth development and/or teaching video production, social justice, community identity, or self-efficacy
• A firm educational and/or practical background in video production
• Personal portfolio and examples of past and/or present work
• Experience with the Department of Education a plus
