The United States makes up 4.6% of the world’s population, yet consumes over 80% of the world’s prescription opioids. Ask Your Doctor looks at the causes and effects of the current opioid epidemic in the U.S, and specifically the harmful impact it is having on the lives of youth in NYC. The film tells the story of EVC student Ali who is currently in a federally mandated rehabilitation program after being charged with a drug felony. Through telling Ali’s story, the film seeks to answer why drug addiction is so often treated as a criminal justice issue rather than a public health crisis.
