The intergenerational Council serves as a sounding board for new directions proposed by EVC’s leadership, and advises on new directions for the organization that will honor the experiences of its members. The Council includes a Youth Committee, specifically for alumni aged 25 and under, in keeping with EVC’s youth-centered values and pedagogy. The Council advises on alumni relations and support, the ethical use of EVC’s film archive, and other matters related to EVC’s overarching mission and organizational goals. Alexus Stewart (she/her) Alumni Advisory Council EVC Films: Colors of Health: Understanding Unequal Care in New York City (2018); Ride to Nowhere (2018) While at an alternative school and unsure of her future path, Alexus made two films at EVC including one in which she testified at an MTA hearing to demand accountability. Alexus used these films to help get a full scholarship to Ithaca College, one of the top 25 film schools in the country. Alexus is now in her senior year as a Park Scholar at Ithaca College studying filmmaking, where she is also the president of the Black Student Union. Alexus is currently working as a Programming and Outreach Intern at the American Documentary organization. Alexus continues to build her voice as a filmmaker who centers Black people and other marginalized groups. She is deeply committed to dismantling anti-blackness, ableism, racist structures, and gender norms by telling untold stories of marginalized people. Alexus continues to learn and expand her frameworks inside and outside the classroom to reconceptualize, reimagine, liberate, and challenge worlds and environments where these structures of oppression no longer exist. (ella) Consejo Asesor de Ex-Alumnos Películas de EVC: Colores de la Salud: Comprendiendo la Desigualdad en Atención Médica en la Ciudad de Nueva York (2018); Viaje a Ninguna Parte (2018) Mientras estaba en una escuela alternativa y no estaba segura de su futuro camino, Alexus hizo dos películas en EVC, incluida una en la que testificó en una audiencia de la Autoridad de Transporte Metropolitano (MTA) para exigir responsabilidad. Alexus usó estas películas para poder obtener una beca completa para Ithaca College, una de las 25 mejores escuelas de cine del país. Margaret Sheble (she/they) Archive Distribution Specialist Margaret Sheble (she/they), a 2024-2026 American Council of Learned Societies Leading Edge Fellow, holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in English Literature from Purdue University and a B.A. in Art History from Northern Arizona University. As the Archive Distribution Specialist at EVC, she will help co-create anti-oppressive strategies with the community for archival content and coordinate select archival programs and film festivals. Margaret has held key roles in museums, universities, and cultural institutions, including editor, digital learning manager, instructor, archivist, and curator. Recently, she served as Secretary and Co-Chair of the Library Committee for the Rochester Rainbow Union, focusing on Pride outreach and LGBTQIA+ resources while implementing a new strategic plan. Margaret is a strong advocate for the transformative impact of storytelling and the vital need for equitable access to cultural resources. Dalia McGill (she/her) Youth Media Instructor Born in NYC and raised in Brazil, Brazilian-American filmmaker, Dalia has worked extensively in the Brazilian Amazon. She received her BA in geography and studio art at Dartmouth College in 2016 and her MA in international relations at the University of São Paulo in 2024. Dalia is fluent in Portuguese and Spanish and participated in EVC’s Credible Educators program in 2024. (ella) Instructora de Medios Juveniles Nacida en Nueva York y criada en Brasil, la cineasta brasileño-estadounidense Dalia ha trabajado ampliamente en la Amazonía brasileña. Obtuvo su licenciatura en Geografía y Arte en Estudio en Dartmouth College en 2016 y su maestría en Relaciones Internacionales en la Universidad de São Paulo en 2024. Dalia habla con fluidez portugués y español y participó en el programa Credible Educators de EVC en 2024.

Maude Carroll (she/her) Alumni Advisory Council EVC Films: Waiting to Inhale (1998), Hip Hop: A Culture of Influence (1999). Maude Carroll is a proud EVC alum from 1997-1999 and helped produce films as part of both the Doc Workshop ("Waiting to Inhale") and Youth Organizer's Television ("Hip Hop: A Culture of Influence"). After pursuing a bachelor's degree in documentary video from Antioch College, Maude has followed a near 20 year career path in the nonprofit sector and specializes in digital communications. Currently, Maude serves as the Digital Engagement Strategist at the American Constitution Society, a membership network and educational resource for the progressive legal community. Originally from the Bronx, Maude currently lives in and works remotely from Chicago, where she misses real pizza on a regular basis. Steve Goodman EVC Founder Steve Goodman (he/him) is the founding executive director emeritus of the Educational Video Center. After producing an acclaimed documentary on a South Bronx youth gang in the 1970s and teaching video in a Lower East Side alternative high school, he established EVC in 1984 to empower youth to make their voices heard about critical issues in their lives. Under his direction for nearly 35 years, students at EVC have produced powerful social justice documentaries that have won over 100 awards, including an Emmy. Trained as a journalist at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, Goodman has directed award-winning independent documentaries and has taught in New York City transfer high schools; New York University; University of London, Institute of Education; and other universities. Co-author of EVC’s Youth-Powered Video curriculum, he has brought EVC’s methodology to youth through summer documentary camps in rural Appalachia and across the world through workshops in Soweto, South Africa; Belfast, Northern Ireland; London, England; and Bangalore and Delhi, India. Goodman writes extensively on critical media literacy, youth media, civic engagement and education reform for numerous publications. He is the author of Teaching Youth Media: A Critical Guide to Literacy, Video Production, and Social Change and most recently author of It’s Not About Grit: Trauma, Inequity and the Power of Transformative Teaching which was a 2019 Prose Award Finalist in Education and won the 2018 Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Gold Award in Education.
