EVC Alum, Billy Marte, Featured on News 12 the Bronx

Updated: Dec 22, 2021

We are thrilled to share that EVC alum, Billy Marte, was featured on News 12 the Bronx for his documentary—“Making a Way: Getting In and Succeeding in College.” In mid-February, News 12 the Bronx shared his story, starting with the work he did at EVC to his latest internship.

After having doubts about attending college, he chose to turn the camera onto his own life and research college access and success. The film opens with Billy’s biggest question: “Should I just start working or should I go to college?”

This is the overarching question for many students in New York City. Then, Billy and other EVC students did some more research and reporting. They discovered that 18-24 year-olds unemployment rate is a mere 7.7% for those with a Bachelor’s degree, but it is 19.7% for those with only a high-school diploma.

After his hard work to pass his math tests and discovering his options for education past high-school, Billy is now attending Bronx Community College. Due to his experience at EVC and a connection with another EVC alum, Alex Soto, he also has landed an internship at Bloomberg News. Billy’s success is a prime example of what EVC’s mission is. Empowering youth and giving them the tools they need to continue their education and pursue their passions.
