The experience is deeply transformative for our students & mdash; building their skills and self-confidence, and opening new possibilities for them to graduate, and pursue college and a career. This spring, our youth took their cameras to investigate social problems too often overlooked by the mainstream news. One team documented the struggles of families trying to save their homes from foreclosure, including the family of one of our students. The other team reported on the impact of war on young people and their families. Schools all over New York City are asking for EVC’s program for their students, but cuts in school budgets and private funding are making it increasingly difficult for us to keep up with this demand. A Premiere Screening from EVC’s Youth Documentary Workshop January 10, 2011 Shadows of Ignorance – Combining personal stories with historical and contemporary struggles for gay rights, this powerful documentary gives voice to the painful discrimination and in some cases, acceptance, that LGBT youth experience with their friends and family on a daily basis. Crossing Waters: The Story of Liberian Youth in Staten Island – Relocated to Staten Island after a brutal civil war, Liberian youth and their families find a new set of challenges. EVC youth producers document the Liberians’ struggles to overcome adversity with the support of their local school and community centers, as they heal from the traumas of war and make a new life here. The Pulitzer Center for Crisis Reporting provided mentoring for this project.
