    The Paley Center for Media Presents 11th Annual Urban Visionaries Youth Film Festival A Unique Film Festival Created and Curated by Teens for Teens April 10th and April 11th, 2008 The Urban Visionaries Youth Film Festival – which marks its 11th anniversary this year – will take place on April 10th and April 11th at The Paley Center for Media, formerly The Museum of Television & Radio, in Manhattan. The festival showcases fiction, documentary, and experimental videos created by young filmmakers that explore issues effecting young people today. All the work screened in the festival is created by teens; entries are reviewed and selected by a volunteer committee of young people who critique and celebrate the work of their peers. “Urban Visionaries began as a series of screenings at small neighborhood organizations. Eleven years later it’s a full-fledged youth media festival,” said Hillary Kolos, Festival Coordinator. “This year we expect to reach some 1500 young people in New York City and beyond.” Highlights of this year’s festival include: screenings of fiction, documentary and experimental videos by young producers; a popular “video slam,” (an open mic for young filmmakers); youth performances of poetry, music and dance; panel discussions; and a youth-led Media EXPO at Manhattan Neighborhood Network where young people from around the city attend workshops on media-making and analysis. Urban Visionaries is a collaboration between youth media makers and educators from New York City’s premiere media literacy organizations, including Downtown Community TV (DCTV), The Educational Video Center, Ghetto Film School, Global Action Project, Listen Up!, Manhattan Neighborhood Network’s Youth Channel, Reel Works, T.R.U.C.E., and The Paley Center for Media.

  • Urban Visionaries Media Expo

    The Urban Visionaries Youth Festival (UVYFF) is proud to sponsor the 2008 Media Expo! 10AM-5PM Saturday April 5th, 2008 Manhattan Neighborhood Network 537 West 59th Street in Manhattan. A, B, C, D or #1 train to 59th St & Columbus Circle The Expo is an opportunity for teens to gather and participate in a wide range of media workshops – at both the beginner and intermediate levels. These workshops can serve to deepen students’ skills and expose them to the wonderful world of youth media production in New York City. The Expo will feature workshops run by Downtown Community Television (DCTV), Educational Video Center (EVC), Global Action Project (GAP), the Ghetto Film School, MNN, The Paley Center (formerly The Museum of Television & Radio), Reel Works and T.R.U.C.E. The workshops will range from Media Literacy to Production. There will also be live performances and college information.   • “Still Standing” to Screen at Columbia University, Sat Apr 5

    Still Standing has been selected as a finalist for Columbia University’s National Undergraduate Film Festival of 2008. Still Standing will be screened, along with other student works, from 7PM-10PM on Saturday, April 5th at the Roone Arledge Cinema of Columbia University’s Lerner Hall.   • “Losing Ground” Screened at Tribeca Film Festival, May 1 & 2, 2008

    The short version of Losing Ground follows the story of Jenny and Raquel, a young lesbian couple who face the crisis of Every night thousands of young people under the age of 18 are forced to sleep in shelters, at the homes of friends and relatives, or on the street. Many are young people from families affected by rising poverty rates and the declining supply of affordable housing; many are youth that have been kicked out of their homes because they are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered. The Tribeca Film Institute (TFI) hosted two separate screenings: 1) May 1, at 12:30pm, at the BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center, as part of the Tribeca Youth Screening Series 2) May 2, at 6:00pm, at the Village East Cinemas, as part of TFI’s Annual Gala Screening

  • Youth Speakers Bureau “It’s Not About Sex” Training, Mar 21

    Cara Rodriguez-Fucci from the Anti-Violence Project facilitates a training for select Youth Speakers Bureau members and producers of It’s Not About Sex, helping them brainstorm different exercises they can use in classrooms and organizations to engage the audience with various issues within the film.     Irum, who worked on Faces of Food in Fall 2007, is now working at the Manhattan Neighborhood Network as a peer trainer.

  • “Journeys” Screens at the Bushwick School for Social Justice

    Journeys Through the Red, White & Blue screens at the Bushwick School for Social Justice on October 8th. An EVC staff member and youth producers of the film screen the film and have a discussion for four different classes of seniors throughout the day.

  • “Journeys” Screens at the Brooklyn Public Library

    The New York City Department of Youth & Community Development sponsors a screening and discussion of Journeys Through the Red, White & Blue at the Brooklyn Public Library at Grand Army Plaza on October 8th from 4-6pm. Filmmakers, NYCDYCD and EVC staff members are present for discussion.
