  • EVC Alum, Billy Marte, Featured on News 12 the Bronx

We are thrilled to share that EVC alum, Billy Marte, was featured on News 12 the Bronx for his documentary—“Making a Way: Getting In and Succeeding in College.” In mid-February, News 12 the Bronx shared his story, starting with the work he did at EVC to his latest internship. After having doubts about attending college, he chose to turn the camera onto his own life and research college access and success. The film opens with Billy’s biggest question: “Should I just start working or should I go to college?” This is the overarching question for many students in New York City. Then, Billy and other EVC students did some more research and reporting. They discovered that 18-24 year-olds unemployment rate is a mere 7.7% for those with a Bachelor’s degree, but it is 19.7% for those with only a high-school diploma. After his hard work to pass his math tests and discovering his options for education past high-school, Billy is now attending Bronx Community College. Due to his experience at EVC and a connection with another EVC alum, Alex Soto, he also has landed an internship at Bloomberg News. Billy’s success is a prime example of what EVC’s mission is. Empowering youth and giving them the tools they need to continue their education and pursue their passions. • 30th Anniversary Timeline: Leading the Field

FIELD BUILDING LEADERSHIP IN EDUCATION Since our first professional development workshops for teachers 30 years ago, we’ve worked to expand student media arts production in schools across New York City – and beyond. We worked with teachers to not only bring more media making into the curriculum, but to create student-centered classrooms animated by student voice, creative expression, and inquiry into the social conditions of their lives. Over the years, we’ve remained committed to these foundational ideas through our teaching, coaching, writing, and field building work in education. Our methodology has been enriched through our work with partners including Foxfire, the NYC Writing Project, CCT, the Coalition of Essential Schools, Bread Loaf, NYU, the British Film Institute, and the Open Society Institute Youth Initiatives. In the 1990’s, we built collaboration among teachers, youth media practitioners and school reform leaders by co-sponsoring the National Conference on Media Education and School Reform and through work in the Students at the Center initiative. In the 2000’s, we codified EVC’s principles and best practices of project-based, critical media pedagogy through the publications of Teaching Youth Media (TC Press) and Youth-Powered Video Curriculum and the development of the Youth Media Learning Network. We continue our field building leadership in education with new initiatives including the dissemination of our students’ archive of documentaries in schools and libraries to foster youth voice, critical literacy, and community action.
