  • EVC Partners with ACLS for Leading Edge Fellowship

    Educational Video Center is pleased to announce that it has been selected by the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) as a host organization for a Leading Edge Fellowship, which aims to demonstrate the potential of the humanities to solve problems and build capacity in various sectors beyond the academy. The fellowships provide support for placing talented, entrepreneurial recent PhDs in art and architectural history and related fields in organizations around the country, to help communities respond to issues caused by the COVID-19 crisis and advance public understanding of the pandemic. In summer 2020, the program will put 6 recent PhDs to work on projects at partnering organizations in the nonprofit cultural sector. Fellows receive an annual stipend of $60,000, as well as access to additional funds for health insurance and professional development. This initiative is made possible through the support of the Henry Luce Foundation. The application deadline is July 31, 2020 (9pm EDT).     For our second screening, we will be watching our 2018 documentary Colors of Health: Understanding Unequal Care in New York City with the Youth Producers who made it. This film explores the racist practices and structural inequities that lead to worse health outcomes for Black and Hispanic patients within our healthcare system. As the Covid-19 pandemic has exposed stark inequalities in healthcare access and quality of care, this important film reveals that these issues have always been hiding just below the surface.   • EVC Presents Docs & Dialogue – Losing Ground

    Join us for a critical screening of a youth-produced documentary examining the homelessness crisis facing New York families. For the third screening in this series we will be watching the 2008 documentary Losing Ground: The New Face of Homelessness with the Youth Producers who made it. This film and topic was selected by the audience at our last Docs & Dialogues screening! This film explores the experiences of youth and families made homeless for a variety of reasons including rising poverty and lack of affordable housing to youth kicked onto the streets for their sexuality. Made in 2008, this film is unfortunately still relevant as thousands of people sleep out on the streets every single night in the richest city in the world.   • EVC Presents: The Fight for Gender Justice

    EVC Presents Docs and Dialogue returns this month with a screening of the 2004 film Patriarchy is Malarkey! and a community discussion about gender justice. This film explores the discrimination and violence that women face in society, and examines the policies and media representations that deny them control over their bodies. Through interviews with their peers, feminist scholars, and social workers, EVC Youth Producers gain an understanding of how patriarchy affects their lives. Featuring footage from the March for Women’s Lives demonstration in DC, this documentary sheds light on the history of youth activism about gender inequity. With issues surrounding gender discrimination and women’s right to choose at the forefront of American politics, there couldn’t be a better time to come together and share experiences and strategies for the struggle against gender inequality.   • EVC Presents: Environmental Justice and Public Housing

    For this edition of EVC’s Docs & Dialogue series we’ll be watching the 2012 documentary Breathing Easy with the youth producers who made the film. This documentary explores the harmful impact that lead poisoning, mold, and pests and pesticides in low-come housing have on the health and wellbeing on their communities. EVC youth producers investigate the presence of these pollutants in their fellow student’s Harlem apartment, and they show how the information and advocacy provided by WE ACT for Environmental Justice and other health experts give hope to a family in need. In 2013, this film was included in the exhibition “Health is a Human Right: Race and Place in America,” at the David J. Sencer CDC Museum in Atlanta, Georgia.   • EVC is Hiring: Deputy Director, Programs

    The Educational Video Center is seeking an exceptional Deputy Director, Programs to support all programs. The Educational Video Center (www.evc.org) is an award-winning non-profit youth media organization dedicated to teaching documentary video as a means to develop the artistic, critical literacy, and career skills of young people, while nurturing their idealism and commitment to social change. This is a full time position supporting EVC’s program directors and instructors through program goal setting and evaluation, financial oversight, and grant and contract compliance, coordination of program communications and marketing, as well as classroom observation, review of lesson plans and staff professional development. The Deputy Director, Programs will work under the supervision of the EVC Executive Director and will oversee universal administrative and pedagogical aspects of EVC’s programming which includes Youth Doc Workshops (YDW), New Media Arts (NMA) and Professional Development Programs (PDP). Responsibilities: Program Management and Outreach Work with program directors to co-develop program and pedagogic goals, and benchmarks for evaluating them. Provide oversight of program grants, progress reports, budgets, accounts receivables and contract compliances. Coordinate with program directors to set program calendars and ensure programs meet benchmarks and production deadlines and program outcomes. Provide oversight of student recruitment, retention, and finding supplemental supports for students as needed in collaboration with program directors. Develop and lead career development initiatives for students and alumni including cultivating relationships for internship placements and managing internship placement process. Create and manage an alumni relations communication system for continuous stewardship and cultivation. Coordinate program marketing, communications to stakeholders, and oversight of film festival outreach, distribution opportunities, and sales of documentaries. Cultivate creative strategies for film distributions including but not limited to film festivals and community based screenings for public awareness, advocacy and systems change work;  develop means of measuring the reach of each film. Pedagogy and Curriculum Support Support program directors in intentional pedagogic approaches and curriculum development (grounded in latest evidence-based youth media and critical media literacy, ensuring DOE alignment, and sharing new trends in curriculum/learning landscape). Support staff to align Youth Powered Video (YPV) curriculum with EVC logic models, strategic plans, rubrics and Philosophy of Practice. Work with program directors to set instructional goals and to review lesson plans for YDW, NMA instructors and PDP coaches based on YPV curriculum. Work with program directors to conduct regular site visits observing workshops facilitated by EVC instructional staff implementing EVC’s methodology. Work with program directors to prepare discussion guides for each film in preparation for distribution. Program Staff Support and Professional Development Provide day-to-day supervision of program staff and report to the Executive Director. Work under the supervision of EVC Executive Director. Fill in for program/instructional staff as needed in event of absence or transition Support Human Resources for program staff including onboarding and orientation, employee paperwork, benefits administration, timesheets, pay-time off, medical leave. Collect and review evidence with staff of their accomplishments meeting goals. Support staff in coordinating culminating screening/launch events. Foster proactive learning community among staff members and key program stakeholders to encourage best practices, interdepartmental collaboration and continuous program improvement. Foster internal and external strategic professional development opportunities for staff (including but not limited to study groups, literature review, retreats, trainings, conferences etc.) In collaboration with the Executive Director, cultivate opportunities for authoring publications and presenting work at conferences. Qualifications This position requires current knowledge of political, cultural, technical and educational practices and literature relevant to EVC programs with a focus on youth development and student-centered inquiry-based learning, culturally relevant pedagogy, critical pedagogy, equity and social justice. This position will report to and be evaluated by the Executive Director.     The Educational Video Center (www.evc.org) is seeking an exceptional full time mission-driven Archive Distribution Manager to oversee the maintenance and dissemination of our living archive of youth-produced films. EVC is a nonprofit youth media arts organization dedicated to teaching documentary video as a means to develop the artistic, critical literacy, and career skills of young people, while nurturing their idealism and commitment to social change. For over three decades, EVC youth producers have produced award-winning short documentary films on social justice issues impacting them and their communities. Our archive of over 200 artful youth produced films explore topics such as police brutality, healthcare inequity, environmental racism, unequal education, gentrification, mental health struggles, LGBTQ+ discrimination and more. This position reports to EVC’s Executive Director, will be guided by EVC alumni advisory, and will supervise a full time Film and Video Archivist. Responsibilities: Archive Maintenance Builds, manages, and maintains digital video archive platform(s) for online video monetization through editorial licensing, as well as for independent screenings, teaching, advocacy, and research purposes. Familiarity with archival video platforms and metadata standards for multiple audiences, including internal and external stakeholders. Knowledge of current trends, issues, workflows, and best practices associated with moving image conservation and distribution. Expertise in copyright law as it pertains to video, film and media collections; responsible for researching and responding to copyright and ownership issues. Ensures accurate and up-to-date inventories and reconciliation of archives and records. Evaluates and coordinates the re-housing and stabilization of archives as needed. Develops EVC archive code of ethics in collaboration with EVC alumni advisors, Executive Director and other stakeholders. Advises in the creation, development, and implementation of collections management policies and procedures, as well as departmental goals and preservation planning. Archive Distribution Responsible for working alongside the leadership team to develop distribution strategies, goals and three-year archive monetization business plan. Coordinates and facilitates archive access and licensing requests, as well as responding to archives information inquiries and requests. Structures and negotiates various editorial video licensing and distribution agreements for archive usage requests. Day-to-day platform relationship management and channel growth; Responsible for all aspects of ongoing partnership management including partner onboarding, licensing negotiations, subscriber and viewership growth, technical cooperation, marketing initiatives and new partner development. Monitor breaking news and pitch relevant content to appropriate users. Analyze user and usage data, and prepare regular reports on engagement and trends and provide insights to inform decision-making. Maintain understanding of competitive marketplace and key differentiators Other responsibilities as assigned and required. Qualifications: Master’s degree in Library and Information Studies or Archival Studies, or equivalent combination of education and professional experience. Experience with professional archives licensing and management. Supervisory experience required. Working knowledge of video content needs and technical requirements of both current and emerging digital platforms. Strong editorial judgement, intellectually curious, well-read, and abreast of current events, politics, and popular culture. Must believe in the power of stories to create social change; creates and sustains a race equity culture towards a more just and equitable world. Benefits: The position will be compensated at a full time rate with benefits in the range of $60,000 – $70,000 commensurate with experience, and will be supervised by EVC’s Executive Director. New Media Arts Apprenticeship Youth and Community Voices Workshop From February 15th to February 19th, 2021 our Professional Development Program (PDP) is offering teachers, educators, youth development practitioners an opportunity to learn more about implementing EVC’s pedagogy in their own classrooms while earning continuing education credits through our  Youth and Community Voices Workshop.     The Educational Video Center (www.evc.org) is seeking an exceptional full time mission-driven Archive Video Editor. EVC is a nonprofit youth media arts organization dedicated to teaching documentary video as a means to develop the artistic, critical literacy, and career skills of young people, while nurturing their idealism and commitment to social change. Make creative decisions to edit short youth-produced documentary films (approximately 20 minutes long) to produce multiple short stand-alone video clips (1 – 3 minutes long) for editorial licensing purposes. Understand the context in which finished work will be used to create more effective final products. Perform editorial functions including media reformatting, assemblies, motion graphic design, audio sweetening, color correction, titles/credits, subtitles, and ensuring quality control. Editing and creating trailers, sizzle reels, promotional bumpers, and social media videos as needed. Media management of large amounts of digital content of various sizes to archive in EVC platform(s). Optimize all video assets for web, mobile, and larger screens. Coordinate and attend key creative approval sessions such as final edit playbacks, color/sound correction reviews and legal clearance reviews. Abides by EVC archive code of ethics. Other responsibilities as assigned and required. Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field required. Must be experienced with Adobe Creative Cloud, particularly Premiere Pro and After Effects, as well as Final Cut Pro. Working knowledge of video content needs and technical requirements of both current and emerging digital platforms. Shows close attention to detail, able to multitask and handle numerous changes under tight deadlines with excellent time management skills. Strong editorial judgement, intellectually curious, well-read, and abreast of current events, politics, and popular culture. Must believe in the power of stories to create social change; creates and sustains a race equity culture towards a more just and equitable world. Benefits This is a one year full time position, with the possibility of part time work thereafter. The position will be compensated at a full time rate with benefits in the range of $40,000 – $50,000 commensurate with experience, and will be supervised by EVC’s Archive Distribution Manager. This position is eligible for vacation, sick days, and organizational holidays with health and dental insurance, commuter benefits, and more. This position is presently remote and could be in-office when it is safe to do so.
